Angelo Mathews announces Test Retirement Photograph: (X/Internet )
In what seems to be a big piece of news for cricket fans, the veteran Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews announced his Test retirement. Mathews announced with an X post that the first Test against Bangladesh in the upcoming Test series will be his last game in the longest format of the game.
The 37-year-old has joined the recent bandwagon of retirements, following the path of former India Test greats, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who announced their Test retirements earlier this month.
“My dear friends and family, with a grateful heart and unforgettable memories. It is time for me to say goodbye to the most cherished format of the game, International Test cricket. The past 17 years of 17 years of playing cricket for Sri Lanka have been my highest honour and pride. Nothing can match the feeling of patriotism and servitude when one dons the national jersey,” wrote Mathews in the letter he penned down and shared on his official X handle (formerly Twitter).
“I have given my everything to cricket, and cricket has given me everything in return and made me the person that I am today. I stand grateful to the game and thankful to the thousands of Sri Lanka cricket fans who have been there for me throughout my career, during my highest of highs and lowest of lows. The first Test match against Bangladesh in June will be my last red-ball appearance for my country,” he added later.

A glorious career comes to an end
In his 16-year-long illustrious Test career, Mathews has played 118 matches for Sri Lanka, scoring 8167 runs in 210 innings, with 16 centuries and 45 half-centuries. It also includes his best performance of ‘unbeaten 200 runs in an innings.’ Besides that, he also scalped 33 wickets in 86 innings with the ball.
With the conclusion of the first Test against Bangladesh next month, he will be ending his Test career as the third-highest run-scorer for Sri Lanka in Tests, following two former greats, Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara.
