Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni had all eyes trained on him ahead of the IPL 2025 game against Gujarat Titans (GT) on Sunday. CSK came into the game bottom of the table, having endured their worst season. Dhoni won the toss and chose to bat first as CSK made one change with Deepak Hooda in the playing XI for R. Ashwin.

Former India coach Ravi Shastri asked Dhoni how the body is coping after 18 years of playing IPL cricket. The 43-year-old replied that coming into the league every year is a new challenge. There were no indications given about potential retirement or return to the league next season during the toss.

For the home side, Gerald Coetzee came into the side, replacing Kagiso Rabada. The right-arm fast bowler last played against the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium. Coetzee, who isn’t part of the South African squad for the WTC final game against Australia, will be a key player for GT in the upcoming knockout matches.

CSK skipper MS Dhoni noted during his interaction with Ravi Shastri that winning or losing the game doesn’t have much significance. The 43-year-old said that irrespective of the result, CSK are going to end the season in the tenth spot. Dhoni also mentioned the game will give his side a chance to play with freedom and urged his side to enjoy their cricket.

Focus will also be on Ayush Mhatre, who has made an amazing start to his life as an IPL cricketer. The 17-year-old was recently named the captain of the India Under-19 side for the tour of England, which also includes Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Dewald Brevis is another player who will be keenly watched as CSK assess their plans for the next season.

Sai Sudharsan starts on the bench as an impact player and is expected to feature later in the game. Jos Buttler is also set to fly back to England, as he is part of the national side for the white-ball series against West Indies. If the Titans win on Sunday, they are confirmed to finish top of the points table heading into the playoffs.
