Unbeaten India continued their winning streak in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024; the men in blue defeated the hot favourites Australia by 24 runs in their last super-8 stage game at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia. It was also the second consecutive defeat for Australia in the Super Eights.

Earlier, they lost to Afghanistan by 21 runs in their second super-8 game at the Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown, St Vincent.

Speaking of the action of the India vs Australia mega clash, the Aussie skipper Mitchell Marsh won the toss and asked Rohit Sharma’s men to bat first. Batting first, India skipper Rohit Sharma single-handedly took the charge himself and smashed a blistering knock of 92 runs off just 41 balls, with 7 fours and 8 sixes, registering a sensational strike rate of 224.39.

Besides him, star middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav also scored 31 runs off just 16 balls, with 3 fours and 2 sixes followed by 28 and 27 runs scored by Shivam Dube and Hardik Pandya, respectively.

The veteran Australia pacer Mitchell Starc and all-rounder Mitchell Starc scalped 2 wickets each for their side, alongside one wicket picked by Josh Hazlewood.

Travis Head’s masterclass goes in vain as Indian bowlers had the last laugh

While chasing the target, the Aussies faced an early blow in veteran opener David Warner in the first over just at the team’s score of 6 runs. But then came a quick and fiery partnership of 81 runs for the 2nd wicket between Travis Head and skipper Mitchell Marsh in just 8 overs; it was broken by Kuldeep Yadav on the last ball of the 9th over when he dismissed Mitchell Marsh (37 runs off 28 balls, with 3 fours and 2 sixes).

Travis Head smashed 76 runs off just 43 balls, with 9 fours and 4 sixes. However, these knocks went in vain as Australia were restricted to a total of only 181 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in the entire 20 overs and lost the match by 24 runs.

With this win, Rohit Sharma’s India finished at the top of the points table in group 1 of the super-8 stage. Now, they will take on England in the second semi-final of the tournament on June 27, 2024. India and England will be facing each other in a T20 World Cup Semi-Final for the second consecutive time as both teams also faced each other in the T20 World Cup 2022 Semi-Final.
