The IPL 2025 mega-auction marked the beginning of a transformative phase for the Delhi Capitals (DC) as they made significant changes to their squad. The most striking headline leading up to the auction was the departure of their skipper Rishabh Pant. After joining DC in 2016, Pant grew into a star player and served as captain and first-choice retention through two previous mega-auctions.
However, disagreements over contract terms led to his surprising exit, leaving fans and analysts stunned. Axar Patel, a consistent performer and a core part of the Capitals setup, stepped into the spotlight as DC’s first-choice retention. Axar's retention for a hefty ₹16.50 crore salary underscored the franchise's trust in his leadership and all-round capabilities.
Kuldeep Yadav, another key player, secured the second retention slot with a salary of ₹13.25 crore. Kuldeep’s resurgence in recent years solidified his role as a linchpin in DC’s bowling arsenal. Tristan Stubbs, the South African power-hitter, also retained his spot for ₹10 crore, offering a much-needed dynamic presence in the middle order. The Capitals showed faith in young talent by holding onto uncapped wicketkeeper Abhishek Porel for ₹4 crore, hinting at their vision to nurture promising players.
Delhi Capitals go all out in the Auction!
Utilizing the Right-to-Match (RTM) option, DC retained Australian batter Jake Fraser-McGurk for a hefty ₹9 crores. Fraser-McGurk, 22, left an impression last season with 330 runs in nine innings, boasting a blistering strike rate of 234, including 32 fours and 28 sixes.
A major headline from the auction was DC’s ₹14 crore acquisition of wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul. Known for his leadership with Lucknow Super Giants, Rahul is a strong contender to captain DC this season. Australian pacer Mitchell Starc also joined the squad for ₹11.75 crores, adding immense value to their bowling lineup.
England’s Harry Brook, yet to shine in IPL, was bought for ₹6.25 crores, while left-arm pacer T Natarajan came on board for ₹10.75 crores. All-rounder Ashutosh Sharma was signed for ₹3.80 crores. DC also added depth by picking Mohit Sharma (₹2.2 crores), Sameer Rizvi (₹95 lakhs), and Karun Nair (₹50 lakhs).
On Day 2 of the auction, Delhi Capitals bought star South Africa batter and former RCB skipper Faf du Plessis for INR 2 crore. They also roped in pacer Mukesh Kumar for INR 8 crore after using an RTM card. Their 3rd addition of the day was Darshan Nalkande for Rs 30 lakh.
