Two-time champions Australia head into Champions Trophy 2025 on the back of huge personnel losses. Pat Cummins has been ruled out of the tournament which means that Steve Smith will lead the side. The 35-year-old was the captain for Australia during the recent tour of Sri Lanka.
Australia won both the Test matches but were soundly beaten in the ODI series. Steve Smith was the only saving grace with the bat as his side looked clueless against spin. Apart from Pat Cummins, the likes of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Marsh, and Marcus Stoinis aren’t part of the event.
The defending ODI World Cup winners will have their task cut out as they are placed in a tough group. Australia will begin their Champions Trophy 2025 campaign against England, followed by the match against South Africa. The final group game will be against Afghanistan, both sides have played enthralling cricket in ICC tournaments over the last few occasions.
Here is Steve Smith’s complete Champions Trophy record
Matches | Innings | Runs | Best | Average | 50/100 |
3 | 3 | 86 | 56 | 86 | 1/ |
Steve Smith wasn’t part of the 2013 Champions Trophy which was won by India. The right-handed batter led the side in 2017 which had Australia in the same group as New Zealand, Bangladesh, and England. The first match of the tournament ended without result due to rain. New Zealand batting first managed to score 291 on the board with Kane Williamson scoring a century.
Australia were placed at 53/3 when the game was called as Smith was not out on eight runs from six balls. Much like the first match even the second game against the Bangladeshi ended with rain playing spoilsport. Bangladesh batted first and were bowled out for 182 with Tamim Iqbal scoring 95. Steve Smith and his side were 83/1 from 16 overs before the downpour began.
The final game of the group phase stages of Champions Trophy 2025 saw Australia take on England. Needing a win to stay alive, Australia scored 277/9 from their 50 overs with Smith scoring 56 off 77 balls. England won the game via the Duckworth and Lewis method thanks to rain interruption and saw Australia get knocked out of the campaign.

In the last few months, Steve Smith has taken cricketing world by storm with his batting. The right-handed batter scored two successive centuries at home versus India, this was followed by two tons in Sri Lanka. In the two ODI matches against Sri Lanka, Aussie skipper managed to score just 41 runs. With the pitches expected to be better in Pakistan, one can expect yet another batting masterclass from one of great batters in the world.
