After a lot of discussions, confusion, and conundrums, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has finally ended the clouds over the Champions Trophy 2025 row. The apex governing body of cricket has finally approved the hybrid model for the prestigious cricket quadrennial. The biggest concern surrounding the Champions Trophy’s upcoming edition was around hosting India’s matches, as they were firm on not travelling to Pakistan for the tournament.

Now, in the revised hybrid model, the matches of the tournament will be played in Pakistan, alongside Dubai hosting the matches of the Indian team. ICC’s decision landed after both the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) came to a mutual agreement. The agreement also came to a mutual nod from both sides on ‘Pakistan not travelling to India for the T20 World Cup 2026.’ As a result, Pakistan’s matches will be hosted in Sri Lanka, which will be the co-host of the tournament.

‘No financial compensation’ for PCB after losing India matches in Champions Trophy 2025

The outcomes from ICC’s decisions on the Champions Trophy also understand that PCB will not be financially compensated ‘out of the way’ for losing India’s matches in the tournament. However, they have been awarded the hosting of an ICC Women’s tournament after 2027.

Interestingly, all the parties and stakeholders, including ICC, PCB, and BCCI ended up in a ‘tone of agreement’ on these decisions regarding the Champions Trophy 2025.

Notably, the upcoming edition of the Champions Trophy will be played from February 19 to March 9, 2025. Eight full-time members will be playing in the tournament and will be divided into two groups. Two teams topping the table of their respective group will make it to the semi-finals of the tournament.

The hybrid model approved by ICC also translates into the fact that it will follow the footmarks of the Asia Cup played in 2023. If India reaches the semi-final and final, both knockout games will be played outside Pakistan.
