In just a few hours the Board of Control for Cricket in India is set to meet all owners of the IPL teams. The ten teams will sit across the table and discuss the IPL Mega Auctions that is set to take place before the 2025 season. There is set to be massive deliberations on the impact of player rule as well as player retention.
According to a report carried in the Times of India, BCCI is likely to allow maximum retentions of close to 5 or 6 players not just that each team could be allowed to retain a few uncapped players in a different slot.
Apart from that each team could be given one Right to Match card and the purse for each team could be increased. Another huge decision could be is that the IPL Mega Auctions will be held every five years. The next auction could be held in 2030 in a bid for teams to work on their continuity.
Massive decisions set to be taken during the BCCI-IPL meet
One BCCI source while speaking to the Times of India said “A major time of the meeting is likely to be consumed in discussing retentions, which are likely to be not more than five or six in number. More time in the frequency of the mega auction, an increase in purse and performance-based increments for the players”
If the maximum number of player retention goes up there is a chance that MS Dhoni could prolong his IPL future. It was reported on Tuesday that MS Dhoni will be keen to play the IPL 2025 season only if the retention of player slots are increased.
The source also said “every franchise could be allowed to retain, say two to three uncapped players from their squad in IPL 2024 season under an additional slot. The franchises are likely to push for it. Almost all the franchises have developed certain uncapped players they don’t want to lose since they have invested in them over the last two-three years”
Finally speaking about the Impact Rule, the source in question told the Times of India “Look, the rule may not be great from the point of view of developing all-rounder but it is ensuring big scores which the telecaster wants. Also, more players are being tried out and a few players are getting much-needed rest during the matches too. The main thing is, India won the T20 World Cup in June after two years of this rule being tried out in the IPL. It may continue for another year”
