The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set for a meeting with all the franchise owners. There are lots of topics that are set to be discussed and deliberated about. One of the biggest topics of concern is that of the Impact Player rule. The likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had spoken about the rule during the IPL 2024 campaign.
CRICBUZZ has reported that the franchise owners will want to have their say about the Impact player rule. The rule came into effect during the IPL 2023 season with Tushar Deshpande being the first ever player to be brought in as the Impact Player.
While the stakeholders and broadcast partners are in favour of retaining the rule, there seems to be circumspection amongst the ranks. There could be a change if the IPL team owners decide to ask BCCI to either scrap or change the rule.
Other core issues set to be discussed
One of the biggest sticking points has been the retention of players ahead of the IPL 2025 season. Many franchise owners want as many players to be retained as possible for continuity purposes. There is also the case of the right-to-match cards that will be discussed during the meeting.
MS Dhoni according to reports has expressed interest in playing the IPL 2025 season. The former India and Chennai Super Kings skipper will only play the next season if the BCCI allows each team to retain a maximum of 5 or 6 players.
One report said that Hemang Amin who is the CEO of the league has been in touch with all the team owners. The report stated “Amin is understood to have also indicated that the meeting would occur in the late afternoon or evening on July 31. It is believed that all the owners have confirmed their availability for the meeting”
The report further said “While the exact venue has not been confirmed, the congregation is expected to take place at the Cricket Centre, the BCCI headquarters, located within the Wankhede Stadium complex in Mumbai”
IPL 2025 auction date and venue are also likely to be discussed. The purse for each team could also be one of the biggest talking points. With just 4 months left for the end of 2024, the future of some of the key rules of IPL 2025 could be clear soon.
