Amid the ongoing Indian Premier League 2024, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has postponed the meeting with team owners. The meeting was scheduled to take place on April 16 in Ahmedabad. However, it has been postponed due to a change in the schedule of the ongoing tournament.

It’s worth noting that the main agenda of the meeting was a discussion over the number of retentions and increase in salary purses for the upcoming seasons. It was announced earlier that for IPL 2025 there will be a mega auction and this meeting was supposed to take the owner's brain over changes in rules for RTM, retention and salary cap.

Reportedly few franchises are demanding as many as eight retention options. These teams don’t want to change the core which they have built in the last three years. On the other hand, a group of team owners are rigid to have just one retention option.

They are bidding for more RTM options calling it more transparent and will be based on market value. It’s worth noting that the retention process defines the budget for a retained player which is not supported by many franchises. However, using more RTM in the auction also comes at a cost as some teams might make artificial increases in a player’s price to shell out money from their opponent.

Will there be an increase in salary cap?

Another point of discussion among BCCI, IPL and team owners is an increase in the salary cap. According to various media reports, many IPL franchises are looking to increase the current salary cap of INR 100 crore significantly. In some reports, it was suggested to increase by 20 to 25 per cent.

This will make the league more lucrative and might force players to leave international cricket to be fit for the two-month-long tournament. One more issue for which team owners were looking to have a chat was the withdrawal of some players after the auction. This issue is persistent and team owners are looking for a solution.

Notably, this meeting was supposed to take place in the backdrop of the game between Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals in Ahmedabad. However, due to security reasons, the game was rescheduled to April 17 with KKR vs RR game postponed to April 16 in Kolkata. The next date of the meeting is yet to be decided and team owners are waiting for a call from the BCCI.
