Indian cricket coach Gautam Gambhir is at risk of losing his job in the longest format. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), as per reports carried by Dainik Jagran, might opt to go for separate coaches if India loses the Border Gavaskar Trophy. In such a scenario, Gambhir will continue to be the ODI and T20I coach.
Gambhir has come under fire ever since the 3-0 loss to New Zealand. BCCI sat down with Gambhir, along with Rohit Sharma and Ajit Agarkar for six hours. The meeting came about after there were some reported rifts and players not being on the ‘same page’ as the coach.
Dainik Jagran has also reported that VVS Laxman could be the front-runner to be the Test coach. The 50-year-old is currently with the Indian Team acting as the stand-in coach for the four-match T20I series. According to many reports, most of the players are used to the coaching of Rahul Dravid who stepped down in June.
Sanju Samson backs Gautam Gambhir after Durban T20I
Indian star Sanju Samson heaped massive praise on Gautam Gambhir after scoring a century in the 1st T20I. The 29-year-old said, “When you have a supporting captain like Suryakumar Yadav and Gautam bhai and VVS Laxman sir, they all support you during failures”
“The way they communicate with you in your failures is very important. Everyone knows that if we are going through a negative phase, then the player can get lost there. So at that time, I received a lot of phone calls from Gautam bhai and Surya, telling me what to work on,” Samson added.
Former Indian star Sunil Joshi put his weight behind Gambhir during his chat with Times of India. Joshi said, “Knowing Gautam Gambhir, he is a fighting cricketer and we know his commitment towards the game or towards the team. No coach will ever want to be on the wrong side of a result. We need to give him time. Let's now judge by the two series we have seen, just five Test matches. Of course, on home soil, we have lost. I am sure he will also be disappointed with the way the Test matches have gone, but don't judge his acumen or his commitment.”
