Many former cricketers had taken to social media and posted their delight at India’s huge title win. This was India’s third Champions Trophy title win. The first occasion was in 2002 under Sourav Ganguly, where India were the joint winner with Sri Lanka. MS Dhoni then led the team to the podium by beating England in the finals.
Ravichandran Ashwin praises Indian skipper after huge win
Former Indian spin legend was ecstatic after the team won the title by beating New Zealand in the finals. The 38-year-old lauded Rohit for all his achievements on his YouTube channel. Ashwin said, “The biggest legacy is not winning the tournaments. He has won five trophies with MI, he has now won 2 ICC titles also. Rohit Sharma has changed the batting frontier of Indian white-ball cricket; that is his greatest legacy”
The 38-year-old also revealed that he had prayed that India would somehow manage to overcome the odds and win the title. “The day before the 2024 T20 World Cup Final, I was praying slightly to let India win somehow because we had not won only. We were reaching the finals, and it was a case of so close, yet so far. This time, it was written all over, the pressure completely was on New Zealand”. Ashwin also said that India had lacked luck when it came to big games over the last decade in ICC tournaments.
“We could not win a title all those years because of luck, because we were a quality team. We could have won a lot more in the last 10 years. There were a lot of close games, but now this is an amazing feeling. I told right after the T20 World Cup that we are going to win two or three on the bounce. I did not doubt that even for a second,” further added R. Ashwin.
