From 2007 to 2024, nine editions of the T20 World Cup have taken place. In 2026, India and Sri Lanka will jointly host the tenth edition of the T20 World Cup. In as many editions, six teams have won the T20 World Cup at least once. Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Australia are the teams that have won the T20 World Cup exactly once as of 2025.

The first edition of the T20 World Cup was hosted by South Africa, while England and the West Indies hosted it in 2009 and 2010, respectively. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh hosted 2012 and 2014 World Cups, while India hosted it in 2016. India again hosted the T20 World Cup 2021 but in UAE. In 2022 and 2024, Australia and West Indies along with USA hosted the tournament.

India
India scripted history in 2007 in South Africa when they became the first team to win a T20 World Cup. The Men in Blue overcame a strong Australia team in the semifinal to enter the final months after a heartbreaking group stage exit from the ODI World Cup 2007. The final was one for ages, as India beat the arch-rivals Pakistan to lift the title.

India had to wait for 17 more years to win T20I's biggest tournament. In the semifinal of the tournament, India overcame England comfortably, avenging their 2022 loss in the process. In the final, India beat South Africa in a thriller by just 7 runs. In the process, they became the third team to achieve the unique feat.
England
England became the second team to win multiple T20 World Cups. They won their first-ever T20 World Cup in 2010 in the West Indies. In the semifinal, England overcame Sri Lanka to enter the final. At the grandest stage, England beat the arch-rivals from a different format, Australia, to win their first T20 World Cup title.

In 2022, England won its second T20 World Cup title to join the West Indies as the team to have won multiple T20 WCs. In the semifinal, England hammered India by 10 wickets. In the final, England overcame Pakistan in a low-scoring thriller to win their second title.
West Indies
The West Indies became the first team in 2016 in India to win two T20 World Cup titles, after having won it for the first time in 2012 in Sri Lanka. In 2012, the West Indies beat the finalists of the 2010 edition, Australia, handsomely in the semifinal to enter the final.

The Men in Maroon mastered the slow conditions of Sri Lanka in 2012 and overcame the home side in their backyard in the final to win their maiden title. In 2016, WI beat another home side, India, in the semifinal, to enter the final. By beating England in the final in 2016, West Indies became the first twan to win two T20 World Cup titles.
