India lost the first ODI of the series against Australia in Perth by 7 wickets and needs to win the second match at all costs to stay alive in the series. While the short term goal for the Men in Blue would be to win the second ODI and to win the series, the long term goal would be to win the ODI World Cup 2027.

The Indian Team lost an opportunity to win its third ODI World Cup in 2023, as they could not get past Australia in the final. This time around, India would love to have many options to try around, as the World Cup will be played in Africa. Hence, some changed could be expected in the last 2 matches of the series.

Yashasvi Jaiswal

Yashasvi Jaiswal is one of the main batters for India in the last few years. The Southpaw has had a great start to his career, especially in Tests and T20. In ODIs, he has not gotten enough opportunities to play for India. In fact, the 23-year-old has played a solitary ODI for India, which was against England earlier this year.

India could be looking at Jaiswal as the backup opener for the ODI World Cup 2027, especially due to the fact that Rohit would be over 40 and a concern about his form. Giving chances to Jaiswal will be important. Hence, Gill might demote himself down the order to give Jaiswal a chance to open.

Prasidh Krishna

Prasidh Krishna is one of the exciting pacers in the Indian bowling setup. The emerging pacer has got chances in the current setup in Tests. In ODIs, he was not tried as much due to the presence of Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and Jasprit Bumrah. With two of them not being a part of the series, Krishna could get a nod.

However, he was not a part of the Playing XI in the first ODI despite the conditions being ideal for his bowling. Prasidh has a good record in ODIs, a format in which he is a wicket taking bowler. As the ODI World Cup 2027 will be mostly played in conditions with good bounce and carry, Prasidh needs to be given game time.

Kuldeep Yadav

Kuldeep Yadav was surprisingly not a part of the XI in the first ODI in Perth despite being the most capped bowler in the squad. Due to the absence of Hardik Pandya in the team, an extra All-rounder was picked in the XI in the form of Washington Sundar. However, Kuldeep makes a case for his selection.

The Chinaman spinner is a wicket-taking bowler, who has proven himself even at the death lately. His experience will be vital for the team, especially in the absence of Bumrah. The star spinner might get his chance in the upcoming matches where India would need a wicket taking option.
