India's three major tournament wins in Australia in International Cricket (X)
Overview
- India won its first-ever Test series on the Australian soil during the Border Gavaskar Trophy in 2018/19
- India successfully defended its title the following tour in 2020/21 during the absence of some key players for a major part of the series
- In 2008, India won its first-ever ODI tournament in Australia by claiming the Commonwealth Bank Series, beating Australia in two finals
Australia is regarded as the toughest place to tour for the visiting sides in cricket. Especially in Tests and ODIs, given their great record at home historically, Australia is often seen as the team to be beaten in their backyard. Not a lot of teams have achieved success on the Australian soil historically, especially in Tests.
Even in ODIs, not many teams have managed to win bilateral series on the Australian soil. Australia has been arguably the most superior side in ODIs at home, which makes beating them highly difficult. However, India has managed to claim some great wins in Australia over the years. Most of them have come in the longer formats of the game.

Border Gavaskar Trophy 2018/19
The Border Gavaskar Trophy 2018/19 marked India's first-ever Test series win on the Australian soil. India's best result in Australia in Tests was drawing the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2003/04 before winning its first series. Led by Virat Kohli, India delivered a great performance in all four Tests and scripted history.

India became only the fifth team after England, West Indies, New Zealand, and South Africa to win a Test series in Australia. Cheteshwar Pujara shined with the bat for India, while Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers. A collective team effort with contribution from others helped India's historic win of 2-1.
Commonwealth Bank Series 2008
The Commonwealth Bank Series win in 2008 came against Australia's greatest ODI team. It happened months after Australia won its third consecutive ODI World Cup. Despite the retirement of Glenn McGrath, Australia had a solid team featuring Adam Gilchrist, Matthew Hayden, Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke, Andrew Symonds, Michael Hussey, Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson, Stuart Clark, and others in the team.

The tri-series also featured a strong Sri Lankan side, who were the finalists of this ODI World Cup 2007. India managed just enough to qualify for the final, along with Australia. India won the first two matches of the final, which was a series of three matches and won the high profile title, which was a great achievement indeed.
Border Gavaskar Trophy 2020/21
The Border Gavaskar Trophy 2020/21 win is one of India's greatest achievements in Cricket. Before the start of the series, Ishant Sharma was ruled out. Rohit Sharma missed the first two Tests due to an injury. Virat Kohli was set to return home after playing the first Test due to the birth of his first child.
After the first Test, India missed the services of Mohammed Shami. After the second Test, Umesh Yadav got ruled out. In the third Test, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Jasprit Bumrah were all injured. The fourth Test at the Gabba was historic, as India chased 328 and became the first team to win at the venue in Tests in over 32 years.
