The NBA team, the Toronto Raptors, is anticipated to announce today that Vince Carter's No. 15 will be the first to be retired. Carter is scheduled to attend an MLSE Foundation event this afternoon in the newly refurbished Vince Carter Court, located in a northwest end park of the city. Along with certain current players and municipal leaders, Masai Ujiri, the president and vice-chairman of the Raptors, will also be there.

Vince Carter played with the Raptors for seven seasons and was an eight-time all-star. 2000 saw him win the Slam Dunk Contest, while in 1999 he was chosen as the NBA Rookie of the Year. Leading the Raptors to the Eastern Conference playoffs in 2001 was Carter. In Game 7 of the NBA, Carter attempted a jump shot at the buzzer to give Toronto a chance to beat the Philadelphia 76ers, but it hit the rim and missed.

Vince Carter inspired many Canadian basketball players

It was obviously too much for Carter to process, even if he could have received some previous notice of the news. Before being moved and blossoming there, the NBA icon played his first six plus seasons with the Raptors. His time with the Raptors continues to be his most memorable, even though he was eventually traded to New Jersey in December 2004.

Carter's incredible performance in the 2000 dunk contest and his impressive aerial acrobatics made him a Raptors star. He is well known for inspiring a new generation of Canadian basketball players and for having a significant influence in the growth of basketball's popularity in Toronto and across Canada.
