The USA Women's Basketball team for the Paris Olympics 2024 was announced recently. Considered to be one of the greatest domination in the history of the Olympics, the USA Women's team has won the Gold medal in the event in the last seven editions. The team would be eyeing to defend their gold medal in Paris and extend their record streak for another edition.
In 1976, Women's Basketball was introduced in the Olympics for the first time. The US team won the Silver medal in the event. In 1980, the USA boycotted the Moscow Olympics due to the cold war. In 1984, the Women's team won its first gold medal in the event. They followed it up with a brilliant gold conquest in 1988 to defend their gold medal.
1992 was the only year in which the USA missed the gold medal in the event since 1984. In the edition, they won the Bronze medal. In 1996, the USA's unprecedented run of gold medals began in Atlanta. In all editions following it, the US team has won a gold medal till Tokyo 2020. The legendary team would be hoping to strengthen its legacy by winning the gold medal yet another time.
Favorites despite the snub of Caitlin Clark
Recently, the USA announced its Women's roster for the Paris Olympics. It consists of a lot of experienced campaigners. To get a squad of 12 members was itself the toughest squad for the selectors. The snub of Caitlin Clark received a lot of criticism from the fans. Even without an emerging talent like her, the USA seems to be the firm favorite to clinch the gold medal.
The squad consists of the likes of A'ja Wilson, Alyssa Thomas, Breanna Stewart, Brittney Griner, Chelsea Gray, Diana Taurasi, Jewell Loyd, Jackie Young, Kahleah Copper, Kelsey Plum, Napheesa Collier, Sabrina Ionescu, who form a great roster of 12 players. For only the second time in the history of the sport, the twelve women in a Women's Basketball squad have either an Olympic Gold medal or a World Cup Gold medal winner.
