In a recent exchange of opinions within the Basketball community, Magic Johnson added his voice to the growing chorus of criticism directed at Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards. The debate was sparked when Edwards made a controversial statement regarding the skill levels of players from different eras of the NBA.

Edwards' comments, which were initially made during an interview with the Wall Street Journal, claimed that Michael Jordan was the only player with the skill necessary to compete in his era. This assertion has not only drawn criticism from fans but also from notable figures within the basketball world.

The backlash has been significant, with many feeling that Edwards' bold statement overlooks the contributions and talents of other legendary players from Jordan's time and earlier. Among those weighing in is Magic Johnson, one of the greatest point guards in NBA history.

What did Magic Johnson say?

During a recent conversation with Stephen A. Smith, Johnson expressed his discontent with Edwards' remarks. "I never respond to a guy who’s never won a championship," Johnson said. "Edwards didn’t win a college championship, I don’t even know if he won a high school championship." Although Johnson's comment was laced with humour, his underlying message was clear.

By choosing not to directly counter Edwards' claim, Johnson's response underscores a broader point about respect and achievement in the sport. Johnson’s perspective highlights that Edwards, despite his growing prominence in the NBA, has yet to reach the level of accomplishment that defines legendary players like Johnson himself.

The former LA Lakers star’s retort serves as a reminder of the substantial achievements required to earn a place in the conversation about basketball's greatest players. While some may view Johnson’s response as a typical "championship card" defence, his comments emphasize the importance of acknowledging the skills and contributions of past NBA greats.
