A major controversy erupted during the WNBA 2025 match between the Connecticut Sun and the Indiana Fever. In the third quarter of the match, Caitlin was operating with the ball in her hand towards the lane when Sheldon attempted to poke the ball free. In the process, Sheldon poked at Clark's eye, leading to a clash between the duo.

Clark fell on the ground, and the teammates of both the Fever and the Sun confronted each other. Lexie Hull spared no chance to take the spotlight, as she ran over Sheldon and got on her face to spice up things. The duo also had a verbal exchange before being separated from the referees and teammates. Despite the clash, the aggression from both sides did not end.

Tina Charles and Marina Mabrey also suffered the wrath of the referees as they were handed a double technical and a technical, respectively. Towards the ending moments in the fourth quarter of the match, Sheldon had control of the ball when Sophie Cunningham committed a foul, wrapped her hands around Sheldon's head, and pulled her neck to the ground.

Sophie Cunningham, Lindsay Allen, and Jacy Sheldon get ejected from the court

Lindsay Allen came to the defence of her teammate, Sheldon, as she popped up straight to shove Cunningham. The heated moments continued for a while despite the interference of the referees. Before things could escalate further, Allen, Sheldon, and Cunningham were all ejected from the court. Fans took to social media and had mixed opinions on the chain of incidents.

Many claimed that the clash was started by the Suns, and the Fever teammates just replied to them. Many treated Cunningham, the bodyguard of Caitlin, and praised her for standing up for her teammate and friend. Cunningham went viral out of nowhere, and her jersey soared high. Many took to X and asked her to be banned from the league for good.

"I understand wanting to defend your teammate, but THAT was some bush league and dirty work from Sophie Cunningham. Could’ve done some serious damage to Jacy Sheldon’s neck on the play. SC has a reputation for crossing the line," WNBA sportscaster Chris Williamson said about the controversial chain of incidents.

"No place in the game for what Sophie Cunningham did. That warrants further review and penalty from the league," NBC Sports' Natalie Esquire posted. Indiana, however, had the last laugh, as they beat the Sun 88-71 to qualify for the WNBA's Commissioner's Cup Championship, where they will face the Minnesota Lynx.
