Since news of Caitlin Clark's exclusion from the USA women's basketball team for the 2024 Paris Olympics broke, one of the accompanying tales from the Indiana Fever was that the snub "woke a monster."
If such is the case, the monster did not show it during Monday night's game against Connecticut Sun. Coming off their first loss of the 2024 WNBA season, the Sun was clearly hungry to recover, and they did so with an 89-72 thrashing of the Fever. Clark appeared to have had her WNBA breakout in her last game, hitting seven three-pointers and scoring 30 points (matching her career high) in a victory over the Washington Mystics.
However, she was unable to replicate that effort against Connecticut, scoring only 10 points on 3-for-8 shooting from the field. This was her fourth-lowest scoring total during her debut season.
Caitlin Clark departed the game with 4:41 left in the third quarter after incurring her fourth foul, and she remained on the bench with three other Fever players, despite the fans at Mohegan Sun Arena screaming "We want Caitlin!" We want Caitlin!" halfway through the fourth quarter.
Indiana Fever has dropped all three of its games against Connecticut Sun
DeWanna Bonner had 17 points, joining three other players in double figures. Bonner's first three-pointer of the night propelled her into tenth position on the WNBA's all-time record, with 581 points. She went 3 for 4 from behind the arc.
This season, Indiana has dropped all three of its games against Connecticut Sun. On August 28, the two teams will play one other again. The Sun will play the Sky in Chicago on Wednesday. The Fever's season record dropped to 3-10 overall and 2-5 away from home after the loss. On Thursday, Indiana will play host to the Atlanta Dream one more.
