After Red Bull's disastrous year as constructors in the 2024 Formula 1 season, the team's technical director Pierre Wache finally explained the reasons for their poor performance. The Austrian team started the year with complete dominance but after the mid-season, they lost their form and went behind McLaren and Ferrari.

Max Verstappen with his valiant efforts retained his Formula 1 title but Red Bull lost their constructors championship to McLaren and finished third in the championship. After the season, Red Bull made a big decision to sack Sergio Perez and replace him with Liam Lawson to regain the lost constructor's title this year.

RB 20 car issues

To be honest there were some big problems in the RB20 car that Sergio mentioned throughout the season and now Pierre has finally accepted the issues. The RB 19 was the best-ever car in the history of Formula 1 as it won 22 races out of 23 in the 2023 Formula 1 season. But they couldnt replicate the same success with RB 20 car. Wache says, “We expected the whole season to be like the end of the season, a big fight with the others but we were more surprised at the beginning of the season because of the gap we had.

We didnt expect such a big hole in the middle of the season ourselves, but we did expect a big fight with others. There are multiple aspects to the story.” Pierre Wache stated that the correlation issues were the first problem in the car. He said, “The first one is the correlation, which had some different characteristics than what we expected in terms of aero. Another aspect is that we didn't expect some elements inside the car to affect the performance.

We had a loss of downforce in some areas of the map and therefore we didn't perform on the track as we thought in the wind tunnel. So there were some holes and it was mainly a balance issue.” Red Bull faced huge balance problems, especially on the kerbs that made the car undrivable. The Austrian team is constructing a new wind tunnel in their Milton Keynes factory in the UK. Once it becomes operational, they can become the number 1 team interms of aero efficiency.
