The 2025 Formula 1 Australian GP was a disaster for the hometown boy Oscar Piastri, who was gutted after seeing his race vanish in rain. The Melbourne-born driver was comfortably running in P2 before he and his teammate Lando Norris slipped in the rain and went into the gravel.
Lando was lucky enough to escape the gravel and grass but poor Oscar Piastri tried very hard to evade the grass but the slippery race track and his tyres didn’t allow him to do so. He was pinned to the grass and couldn't move his car further.
After some time, he reversed his car, which thankfully worked for him and escaped a disastrous result on his home grand prix. If Oscar hadn’t escaped the grass, then the safety car rule would have been implemented, and Max would have emerged in front of Lando Norris after pitting under VSC.
So, Lando and McLaren should thank Oscar for his impressive rescue efforts at the Albert Park circuit. But eventhough his P2 position was out of sight, Piastri showed incredible grit and fire in his race. He chased both the Ferraris and successfully beat Lewis Hamilton and that too in one of the most dangerous parts of the track.

An impressive final lap overtake from @OscarPiastri 🙌#F1#AusGPpic.twitter.com/ExoIhXuonO
It was between the 9th and 10th corners, which was coming after the DRS zone, where many overtakes and accidents happened in the past. Oscar showed no respect but pure bravery and driving skills. He just charged at the Ferrari driver and made a risky overtake easily.

With this overtake, he pushed the seven-time world champion into P10 and moved to P9. He ended his race in that same position and his team was very happy with his driving and comeback. McLaren was the fastest team on the track and Oscar had a good chance of winning the F1 race in Australia by breaking the curse. But the curse continues and we need to wait one more year to see whether an Aussie driver wins their home grand prix in the 2026 season.
