Nico Hulkenberg’s challenging weekend at the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix took a turn for the worse during the third free practice session on Saturday. In FP3 the German driver experienced yet another crash, leaving his Haas team scrambling.

The incident, which occurred on a wet and slippery Zandvoort track, has not only caused significant damage to his car but also led to a summons by the FIA stewards to explain his actions. The session, marked by treacherous conditions, saw Hulkenberg lose control of his car, resulting in a crash that severely damaged his front wing.

Here is the video:

Despite the damage, Hulkenberg chose to drive back to the pit lane with the broken wing still attached. However, this decision did not sit well with the FIA, which deemed the action potentially dangerous. As a result, Hulkenberg has been called to meet with the stewards to justify his decision to continue driving with a compromised vehicle.

What did Nico Hulkenberg say about the issue?

Speaking over the team radio after the crash, Nico Hulkenberg expressed frustration, saying, "It's again the same as yesterday. I touched the brake and I locked up." His remarks highlight that this wasn’t an isolated incident, but a recurring problem that also plagued him during Friday's practice sessions.

The similarities between the two crashes have raised concerns within the Haas team about the car's performance and handling under braking in such conditions. Hulkenberg's ability to drive back to the pits despite the damage demonstrated his determination, but it has come at a cost.

The front wing, which bore the brunt of the crash, is now unusable for the remainder of the weekend, adding to Haas's logistical and financial woes. The team will now have to find a workaround to ensure Hulkenberg’s car is race-ready for the crucial qualifying session and the race itself.
