The MotoGP German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring witnessed a dramatic turn of events as Marc Marquez suffered a severe crash during the second practice session. Marquez, who had already experienced a minor fall in the opening practice, faced a more perilous accident at the notorious Wasserfall corner during the afternoon session.

While pushing his Gresini Ducati Desmosedici GP23 to its limits, Marquez lost control as his front wheel tucked under, resulting in a high-speed high-side crash. The impact, exacerbated by his knee hitting the ground, sent Marquez tumbling violently off his bike. Despite the crash, Marquez initially returned to the pit garage and rejoined the session, briefly clocking the fastest lap with a time of 1m20.384s.

However, the severity of the crash soon took its toll. Marquez was seen changing out of his race suit and heading to the medical centre for a thorough check-up. Spanish broadcaster DAZN later reported that Marquez had suffered a rib contusion. Though declared fit to continue racing, he opted not to rejoin the session, ultimately slipping down to 13th in the order.

A crash-filled day in Germany!

Marquez’s crash was part of a broader trend at the Sachsenring, where numerous riders fell victim to the tricky right-hand corners. The challenging windy conditions led to a series of crashes, starting with VR46 Ducati rider Marco Bezzecchi’s low side at the same Wasserfall corner. Fabio Di Giannantonio, Bezzecchi's teammate, followed with a severe crash at Turn 1, causing a red-flag stoppage due to damage to the air fence.

The crash frenzy continued with Takaaki Nakagami, Joan Mir, and Pedro Acosta all going down at Turn 1. The relentless sequence of accidents extended to Turn 3, where Augusto Fernandez of Tech3 and later Johann Zarco another left-hander also crashed.

Despite the chaotic practice session and his dramatic crash, Marquez’s determination to fight through adversity was evident. The incident at the German GP highlighted both the dangers inherent in MotoGP racing and the resilience of its riders. As the weekend progresses, all eyes will be on Marquez to see how he recovers and performs in the upcoming qualifying sessions and race.
