'Not possible to replace him...'- Mercedes' new driver Kimi Antonelli on stepping into new role next year

Kimi Antonelli says he wants to be the next driver for the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team rather than filling the shoes of Lewis Hamilton next year.

Kimi Antonelli the young Italian rookie from Formula 2 will be moving to Formula 1 and will head straight to the Mercedes F1 team in 2025. He has bigger shoes to fill when he will replace the 7-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. The British F1 racer after having a very successful stint with Mercedes F1 winning 6 World titles and 8 constructors titles who will be heading to the Maranello-based Italian Team Ferrari next year. 

Kimi Antonelli will partner with George Russell in the 2025 Mercedes team. Antonelli debuted in the 2024 Italian Grand Prix and within 10 minutes he crashed his car. Many criticized Antonelli regarding handling pressure driving an F1 car. The Italian is very confident that he can handle the pressure of Formula 1. 

Not here to replace Hamilton

Talking about Lewis Hamilton’s support to him Antonelli said, “He’s really a great guy. He has been giving me some support. So, yeah. Really happy.” He also said that he was not there to fill the shoes of Lewis Hamilton he was there as the next driver.

He says, “I think it’s not possible to replace Lewis Hamilton. He is such a great figure in the sport today, and he has achieved so much in his career, so I don't want to be seen as his replacement I’m just the next driver for Mercedes in 25, So I’m excited for that.”

Kimi Antonelli is currently competing in the Formula 2 season where he is positioned sixth in the drivers championship. He will also be testing the 2025 Mercedes car privately. Hamilton on the other hand is standing sixth in Formula 1 drivers standings. He had two wins and four podiums in this 2024 season. Next year Antonelli will be fighting for the championship for Mercedes alongside George Russell. He will also be racing against Lewis Hamilton who will be wearing a Red Racing suit instead of Black or silver as a Ferrari driver.
