Mercedes F1 team's oldest title-winning car, W196R, driven by Formula 1 legend Fangio, was sold for a massive price of 51 million Euros at the auction. This is a new world record for a Formula 1 car and it broke the previous record of the same W196R sold in 2013.

In Formula 1 Juan Manuel Fangio is the first driver to win a championship for the Mercedes F1 team. He is also the only F1 driver to win titles for Mercedes and Ferrari. The 5-time world champion also won titles for Alfa Romeo and Maserati.

Mercedes' first title-winning car sold

His championship-winning W196R car with Chassis No 00009/54 was auctioned at the Mercedes Benz headquarters in Stuttgart. It is the first-ever Streamliner chassis ever to be made in the world. It was donated to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum and kept there since 1965.

The Streamliner version is very different to other F1 cars because Mercedes used bodywork to cover its open wheels with a long wheelbase to help the car perform well on low downforce circuits. The car was auctioned at a starting price of 46.5 million Euros. It sold for a massive 51,155,00 Million Euros by the end of the auction making it the highest-ever auction price for a Formula 1 car.

It also became the second most valuable car ever with only the 1955 Mercedes 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe being at the top with 142 million dollars price. Fangio drove this car to win at his home race in the 1955 Buenos Aires Grand Prix and then his teammate Stirling Moss with the same chassis in Monza.

Some Formula 1 cars become more and more valuable as the years pass. People become very interested in these antiques because of their rarity and elegance. Previously in 2013, the only other Mercedes W196R was auctioned and it went for 19.6 million euros at the Goodwood Festival of speed, setting a new benchmark for all these years.
