The Mercedes team found the lost ‘Midas Touch’ in the later part of the season with some crucial points in the Las Vegas Grand Prix where George Russell won the race and Lewis Hamilton finished second. The team finished 4th in the constructors Championship next to Red Bull but they could be the potential contenders for the title next year.
Mercedes 2024 Team Analysis
George Russell the top performer
This year has been great for the British driver George Russell. He dominated his teammate Lewis Hamilton by scoring 245 points and finishing 6th in the drivers championships. He won 2 races in Austria and the Las Vegas Grand prix. George had his chance in Belgium but a water pump issue cost him the race and his teammate Lewis Hamilton won in SPA. Starting from Azerbaijan, he consistently scored points and often finished inside the top 10 bringing some valuable points to the team. He is seen as a potential World champion in the future and many are expecting him to give a tough fight to Max verstappen and Lando Norris next year.
Losing Hamilton a major blow
Mercedes didn't want to continue with Hamilton for several more years so they didn't accept his proposal for a multi-year deal. Ferrari was very conscious about having a driver like Lewis Hamilton in their team which could open up new investments and interests. They grabbed the opportunity and signed him which increased their share value up to 10%.
Losing their most valuable asset to a Prime rival like Ferrari could be a major blow for them. Having a decade-long experience with the Mercedes team, Lewis could show ferrari some new insights and make them a championship-winning team. Ferrari is trying to find the missing piece which is stopping them from winning the F1 title and Lewis could be that missing piece. As of now, the Maranello team is looking very strong having the second-fastest car on the grid and with Lewis Hamilton by their side they could be the biggest threat for Mercedes.
Mercedes finds ‘The Midas Touch’
In the last few races of the 2024 season, Mercedes showed some significant improvement in their pace and balance. This is what gave them 8 constructors title and 7 drivers titles in a row from 2014 to 2021. Playing in the midfield is very new for them which they have been doing for the last three years. They soon want to be at the top of the table as the end of the 2014 regulations is nearing, Mercedes could bring all their might next year to end the ‘Turbo Hybrid era’ as the champions.
Signing Kimi Antonelli is also a plan for the team as they don't want to use their drivers till the expiry date. The 2026 Season also looks very promising for the team as their engine seems to have the potential to win the championships and they are also the big power unit supplier on the grid. Who knows? if 2025 didn't work well for Max verstappen he could make his next move to Mercedes in 2026.
