American MotoGP proved to be a heartbreak for Jorge Martin as he failed to make a podium finish. He struggled to make a comeback after being overtaken by Ducati’s Enea Bastianini on the penultimate lap. However, despite this loss, Martin is still leading the championship chart with around 21 points.
Ahead of the upcoming Spanish MotoGP, Martin backed his rival Reigning double world champion Francesco Bagnaia to win the championship. Bagnaia had some poor performances in the last two races making him 30 points behind the table topper Martin. However, Martin believes that Bagnaia can make a comeback but there is a lot of competition compared to last season.
In a media interaction Martin said, “I don’t know, I think there are a lot of riders who can be fighting for the championship. I think still Pecco is the favourite because he won last season, he is the number one.”
“So, now we just need to be… I mean, the rivals are strong. We have Marc [Marquez], we have even Pedro Acosta, who is good and constant. So, we never know. Enea was super strong all weekend. The important thing is we are fast everywhere, and we need to be focused on that”, he further added.
‘I don’t like to think about that’, says Jorge Martin
Further speaking about his position Martin stressed that he doesn’t look at the standings as he is focused on the upcoming races. He also said that he is happy that his team have 80 points which is impressive.
“For sure, I don’t look at the moment to that,” he said of his position in the standings. “I don’t like to think about that. But the points we are making are for this reason. I am happy about that. I am happy that we have 80 points already, it’s quite a lot”, he further added.
“I think we have to be happy and keep this line, or this way because we are working quite well and focusing on ourselves and improving the results from last season. This is a track where I struggled on in the past and this race weekend we got quite a lot of points, and for sure it’s better to be in the lead than 10th”, concludes Martin.
