The Mexican Grand Prix was the second race where Max Verstappen and Lando Norris's championship battle brought a time penalty. But this time it was Max Verstappen who got a 20-second time penalty. The first one is for pushing Lando Norris off the track and the second one is for exceeding the track limits and gaining an advantage.
Max was running second behind Carlos Sainz when Norris charged at Verstappen on the outside of turn 4 but was forced to run off the track by the Dutchman. The stewards handed Verstappen with a 10-second penalty. Verstappen also took a second-time penalty for exceeding the track limits. After serving the big 20-second penalty Max Verstappen finished in 6th while Norris was second. Lando Norris now reduced Verstappen’s championship point lead from 57 to 47 points.
'Lando is at fault' - Christian Horner
After the race Red Bull boss Christian Horner slammed FIA for being harsh over Max Verstappen and he even claimed Lando Norris divebombed at Verstappen and he was at fault during the race by bringing some GPS Data to the press meet. Horner said “First of all, I think it was very harsh to give two 10-second penalties. I think there's something more fundamental: I Mean, there been a reaction to last weekend. I think it's important for the driver's stewards and the drivers to sit down.”
The Red Bull boss also backed his claims with some GPS data. He said “If I show you on the GPS, this is on rundown to turn four. This is Lando versus Lando. In his fastest lap, the point that he’s braking for turn 4 and then executing the corner.
He is 15 kilometres an hour faster and later on the brakes than his fastest lap. He wouldn't have made the corner, he would have run off the track. You can see from onboard steering. At that point, he’s got 80kg more fuel than his fastest lap.”
Horner also called for the drivers and stewards to meet and talk about the rules of overtaking. As per the rules for overtaking the driver who has the inside line is the owner of that particular corner. Max Verstappen lost a 10-point lead to Lando Norris after the Mexican Grand Prix.
