Adrian Newey has become a red-hot property in the Formula 1 grid. Since his announcement to break 19-year-old ties with Red Bull, many teams are looking to acquire his talent. The latest entrant on the list is Williams.
Williams Formula 1 team principal, James Vowles, has revealed ongoing talks with design maestro Adrian Newey in a bid to entice him back to the squad. In an exclusive discussion with news website Motorsport.com Vowles opened up about his recent meeting with Newey.
Speaking about it he said, “I've known Adrian for a while anyway, and I spoke to him Friday. I'm sure we'll be talking again, very shortly as well. He is an icon of our sport. There is no doubt about it.”
“Every team he's been to since Williams has been championship material. And that's not a coincidence, that is just simply the effect he has on the sport. It would be remiss of me to not be talking to him. It is as simple as that”, he further added.
Can Ferrari lure Adrian Newey?
Meanwhile, the strongest prospect for Adrian Newey is still Ferrari. The team will be with seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton and would be keen to get Newey too. His inclusion will surely help them to get the best out of Hamilton.
Meanwhile, it’s worth mentioning that Newey is intimately familiar with Williams. He played a pivotal role as an architect during its pinnacle era of F1 dominance in the early 1990s. His tenure began in 1991, where he worked alongside then-technical director Patrick Head.
He engineered the legendary FW14B, instrumental in securing Nigel Mansell the 1992 world championship title. His designed cars continued to clinch championships in 1993, 1996, and 1997, before he transitioned to McLaren, contributing to their subsequent title successes from their Woking headquarters. In 2006 Newey joined Red Bull and since then has designed cars that have won 13 titles including drivers and constructors championships.
