The ongoing Formula 1 season has been one of the most exciting in the last few years. Just four races into the season has seen some iconic and unexpected transfers so early in the season. After Lewis Hamilton’s surprising move to Ferrari, Aston Martin has decided to retain Fernando Alonso for the next two seasons.

Ahead of the Shanghai GP Alonso has signed a new contract with Martin which will keep him in the F1 fray till 2026 with his current team. It also came as a surprise for many as Alonso was reportedly in talks with teams like Red Bull and Mercedes for a contract.

However, it will be safe to say that Aston Martin was the best option for the 42-year-old racer. Alonso who was taking time to decide whether he needed to stay in F1 or not was true to his words as he talked to Martin first. After Japan GP He said that he loves the project and will talk to them first.  

Echoing the same Aston Martin principal Mike Krack in a statement after signing the contract said the same. He said, “Securing Fernando’s long-term future with Aston Martin Aramco is fantastic news. We have built a strong working relationship over the last 18 months and we share the same determination to see this project succeed.”

“Fernando is hungry for success”, says Aston Martin

Someone should think why Aston Martin went with the longest-serving F1 driver for two more seasons. At the end of his contract, Fernando Alonso will be 44 years old and it might be a factor in his reflexes. However, the team and Alonso himself believe that he is hungry for success.

The two-time World Champion would look to end his career on a high note and after securing a deal with Hondo, Aston Martin is also keen to produce some powerful vehicles. Reflecting on it team principal said, “We have been in constant dialogue over the last few months and Fernando has been true to his word: when he decided he wanted to continue racing, he talked to us first. Fernando has shown he believes in us, and we believe in him.”

“Fernando is hungry for success, driving better than ever, is fitter than ever, and is completely dedicated to making Aston Martin Aramco a competitive force. This multi-year agreement with Fernando takes us into 2026 when we begin our works power unit partnership with Honda. We look forward to creating more incredible memories and achieving further success together.”

Now, Alonso’s decision to stay in Aston Martin has increased the buzz in the already lit driver market. Drivers like Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz are now set to ablaze the stage as they will surely be the most sought drivers.
