In a surprising twist just before the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, the Haas F1 Team made a last-minute driver substitution. Danish driver Kevin Magnussen fell ill, prompting the American team to pull reserve driver Oliver Bearman into action for the weekend’s races. The news broke just ahead of the opening practice session catching fans and competitors off guard.
The team announced the change through a social media statement: "MoneyGram Haas F1 Team driver Kevin Magnussen will not participate in Friday's track running at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix after suffering from sickness. Official reserve driver Oliver Bearman will take over driving duties. The team wishes Kevin a quick recovery and will provide a further update in due course."
The substitution also presents a valuable opportunity for Bearman, who is set to make his Formula 1 debut as a full-time driver for Haas in 2025. This weekend could serve as a critical experience boost for the young British driver, allowing him to gain additional F1 track time on the Interlagos circuit.
Bearman to make his 3rd F1 outing this season!
Bearman isn’t new to last-minute switches. Earlier in the season, he stood in for Carlos Sainz at Ferrari during the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, where he made a strong impression by scoring points on his debut. This performance likely cemented Haas’s decision to bring him on for a full-time seat next year.
The FIA Stewards also confirmed the lineup adjustment. In their official statement, they permitted Haas to change drivers according to Article 32.2 of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations. Bearman, who will pilot car number 50, must use the same engine, gearbox, and tyres allocated to Magnussen, by Article 32.5. The approval is contingent on Bearman passing standard scrutineering checks, and the team holds the right to appeal if necessary.
This unexpected change comes during a pivotal weekend, with the added challenge of a Sprint Race format. The drivers have only a single practice session to familiarize themselves with the track before heading into Sprint Qualifying, scheduled for later on Friday. With Bearman at the wheel for Haas, the Sao Paulo GP weekend promises a fresh lineup and an extra layer of excitement as fans wait to see if he can replicate the success he displayed in Saudi Arabia.
