The Haas Formula 1 team has been given the green light to leave the Netherlands and head to Monza for the upcoming Italian Grand Prix. It came following the resolution of a protracted legal dispute with former sponsor Uralkali.
The team faced the looming threat of having its F1 cars seized by Dutch authorities and potential criminal charges if they attempted to depart without settling the matter. The controversy stemmed from Haas's abrupt termination of its sponsorship agreement with Uralkali in early 2022, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The Russian fertilizer company had sought legal redress after failing to receive a multi-million-dollar repayment when the deal was cancelled. The legal battle intensified when a Swiss arbitral tribunal ruled in June that Haas owed Uralkali a substantial sum, including interest and fees, and was required to deliver a car from the 2021 season as part of the settlement.
Uralkali confirmed receiving full payment!
Failure to comply with these terms put Haas at risk of severe consequences if it attempted to leave the Netherlands without fulfilling its obligations. In a recent statement, Uralkali confirmed that it has received pending payment and the race car owed under the sponsorship deal. The company also notified Dutch authorities that Haas’s assets could be released, thereby allowing the team to continue its journey to Italy.
Despite the threat of asset seizure, Haas’s performance at Zandvoort remained unaffected, with the cars finishing 11th and 18th. The presence of police and bailiffs at the track on Thursday evening underscored the seriousness of the situation, as they assessed the value of Haas’s on-site assets.
With the financial and legal issues now resolved, Haas has confirmed that its trucks have been cleared to depart the Netherlands and are en route to Monza for the next race on the calendar. This resolution comes as a significant relief for the team, allowing them to focus on their racing efforts rather than legal disputes.
