2025 Monaco GP Qualifying session

Q1 – Most of the teams started the session with soft tyres, while the two Alpines used mediums for the first qualifying session. Charles Leclerc set the fastest lap time on his home track. Norris and Piastri showed some good pace and finishes in P2 and P3. There were many impeding incidents during the session as all 20 drivers wanted to set the fastest lap times and wanted to move to Q2. The Monaco track is very narrow and can’t accommodate all 20 drivers going at full pace. Antonelli had a late crash in the third sector, which spoilt Lance Stroll’s out lap.

Drivers to be eliminated: Franco Colapinto, Lance Stroll, Pierre Gasly, Oliver Bearman, and Gabriel Bortoleto

Q2 – A bad day for Mercedes became worse as George Russell had engine problems during his qualifying run 2. Russell got stuck inside the dangerous tunnel, but the race marshals came to his rescue. He is a contender for the podium in Monaco. The session was red-flagged, and George Russell was towed away by the race marshal, who pushed him out of that tunnel.

With only 10 minutes remaining in the session, Leclerc set the fastest lap time, followed by his teammate Lewis Hamilton. In their final run, Carlos Sainz and Yuki Tsunoda were eliminated by Isack Hadjar and Alex Albon. The Red Bull driver felt the strategy was unfair compared with the junior Red Bulls and Max Verstappen.

Drivers to be eliminated: Kimi Antonelli, George Russell, Nico Hülkenberg, Yuki Tsunoda and Carlos Sainz.

Q3 – In the first run, the McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri managed to set the fastest lap times, followed by Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen. In the final run, Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris fought hard for the pole position, and the McLaren driver emerged as the winner and clinched his first pole since the Australian Grand Prix. It was also a new lap record at the Monaco circuit, and the entire garage celebrated Norris’s pole victory.

Max Verstappen tried his best, but could only finish in P5 ahead of his junior driver Isack Hadjar. Fernando Alonso finished in P7. Esteban Ocon and Alex Albon experimented with medium tyres and later moved to softs, but it didn’t help them as they could only manage P8 and P10. Liam Lawson did very well compared to all his previous races and will start in P9.
