F1 2025 Chinese GP FP1 results: Lando Norris puts McLaren on top

The 2025 F1 Chinese Grand Prix is underway and Lando Norris set the fastest lap time for the McLaren F1 team in the FP1. The two Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton had a promising session at the Shanghai International Circuit in China. Red Bull F1 drivers Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson were pushed out of the top 15, which was shocking. The next session will be the Sprint qualifying and we expect the grid to change a lot as the teams are expected to be back with their best race setup.

Free Practice Session Summary

The session started with many cars and drivers going wide of the track, especially in the penultimate corner and turn 2 of the race track. The pace of the two Ferraris looks promising, but nothing comes near the pace of Lando Norris and his McLaren F1 car, as he was the fastest man of the session. 

Initially, it was the session dominated by Mercedes, but after Jack Doohan's car stalled on the track, it was Red Flag and everyone went into the pits for a final run. When the track was cleared, each driver stormed into the track, setting their best lap times. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton set the fastest laps and were in 1-2. But within minutes, Lando Norris showed his best lap time and became the number 1 driver of the session. Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson didn't have a great session as they finished 16 and 18, which is unusual for a top team. 

We hope they recover on time, as the next session will be Sprint qualifying, in which we will see the starting grid for the Sprint race tomorrow. Liam Lawson still seems to struggle with his car as his former team’s new drivers, Isack Hadjar and Yuki Tsunoda, are far ahead of him.
