Max Verstappen extended his lead in the world championship one day after soaring to sprint victory in the Chinese Grand Prix 2024, capping off a remarkable weekend with victory. On its first visit back to the Shanghai International Circuit since 2019, the three-time world champion dominated the race, finishing 13.7 seconds clear of McLaren's Lando Norris and Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez in third place.

Only when Fernando Alonso received the bonus for the quickest lap around the 5.451-kilometre track on the fringes of the Chinese megacity following a late changeover to new tires did he lose out on a perfect points-scoring weekend. Max Verstappen put on another all-conquering performance, adding his fourth grand prix of the season to his sprint triumph. Verstappen is advancing relentlessly toward a fourth consecutive world championship, and only a rare brake failure in Melbourne interrupted his chances of winning all five races in 2024.

After a late surge through the field, Alonso finished seventh, George Russell finished sixth for Mercedes, and Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz of Ferrari finished fourth and fifth. Lewis Hamilton fought his way up from 18th on the grid to ninth, chasing McLaren's Oscar Piastri, who was in eighth place. Nico Hulkenberg's Haas finished in 10th place, rounding out the point scorers. After starting from fourth on the grid, Norris was thrilled to finish in second place.

Zhou Guanyu made his home debut

Perez was second until a safety car cost him spots, but he finished on the podium for the fourth time in five rounds this season. Zhou Guanyu, the first Formula One driver from China, made his home grand prix debut over the weekend and was a huge draw. After the race, he was permitted to park his vehicle on the grid in front of the grandstands, and the standing audience gave him a standing ovation as he sobbed as he left the cockpit.
