Last year at the United States Grand Prix, Two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso and debutant Liam Lawson had a tussle during the Sprint race. Lawson was making his full-time debut for the VCARB Team and was desperate to prove his place. The New Zealander raced aggressively which was not welcomed by Alonso.

What Happened with Liam Lawson and Alonso?

During his move to overtake Alonso, Lawson pushed the Aston Martin driver to the outside and Alonso called him an ‘Idiot’. After the race, the two had a detailed argument regarding the issue. The Battle continued even during the qualifying and the main race. In Qualifying Alonso overtook Lawson in the warmup lap. Over the radio, Lawson said, “He is doing exactly what he said yesterday about screwing my race.”

The Kiwi is now a Red Bull driver replacing Sergio perez and can challenge all the top teams like McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes. Liam Lawson has opened up about what happened between him and Alonso that day. He said “I feel like I’m racing everybody the same way. I’m not racing anybody any differently. I have a very short window here at the moment, so it's very important to prove myself, but I’m not trying to set an example, or prove a point.”

Lawson finished ninth at the United States Grand Prix and scored 2 points that day. He was well ahead of Fernando Alonso and after the race, he was a bit relieved to score points for the team in his first race. Liam Lawson came in as a replacement driver for the form out Daniel Ricciardo.

Last year December he was promoted to the senior squad Red Bull to be the teammate of Max Verstappen for the 2025 season. If Liam puts a couple of strong races and finishes inside the top 5, he will most likely retained by Red Bull for the 2026 season. Being the teammate of Max Verstappen is the hardest thing in Formula 1 as every other driver failed to beat Max.
