Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has provided insights into the team's future driver line-up, hinting at the potential role of young racer Andrea Kimi Antonelli amidst speculation about who will replace Lewis Hamilton for the upcoming seasons.

Following Hamilton's announcement for joining Ferrari next year, Mercedes has been evaluating options for his replacement. Among the contenders is their highly regarded junior driver, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who has been making waves in the motorsport scene at just 17 years old.

The Canadian Grand Prix, Wolff addressed Antonelli's role in Mercedes' plans, stating, "We've embarked on a route now to say, 'You know what, we want to reinvent ourselves a little bit, going forward.' Kimi Antonelli plays a part in that." Wolff emphasized the team's desire for change while acknowledging Carlos Sainz, who has been linked with Mercedes, saying, "Carlos deserves a top seat... But he's doing a super job."

Kimi Antonelli has been impressive

While no decision has been made for the next season, Wolff highlighted the importance of clarity for Sainz, allowing him to make decisions for himself. Antonelli, part of Mercedes' junior program, has been impressive during his time with the team.

Technical Director James Allison praised Antonelli's adaptability and performance during his F1 outings, stating, "He looked like he had been in an F1 car within a lap or two... He looks like the real deal."

Antonelli, despite being in his debut F2 season, has shown promising results, currently sitting sixth in the standings after five rounds. With points in seven out of 10 races and strong finishes in Melbourne, Imola, and Monaco, Antonelli has demonstrated his potential both in F1 machinery and on the track.

The remarks from Wolff shed light on Mercedes' future direction and the significant role Antonelli could play in shaping it, adding further intrigue to the ongoing discussions about Mercedes' driver lineup.
