Christian Horner, the Red Bull squad Principal, has made it clearest yet who would take Sergio Perez's place on the squad in 2025 if the two chose to split up. After finishing on the podium four times in the first five Grands Prix of 2024, Perez had a difficult remainder of the season, finishing with just 49 points between rounds seven in Imola and twenty-four in Abu Dhabi, which was less than he had achieved during the year's first four race weekends.
As a result, Red Bull finished the season in third place among the constructors, behind McLaren and Ferrari, even though Max Verstappen had already won the championship two rounds earlier. It is true that the team would have won the constructors' championship by more than 200 points if the second Red Bull had achieved the same number of points (437) as Verstappen.
Red Bull gave Perez a two-year contract extension in June, but the Mexican's performance has raised speculation that he might be replaced in 2025. Horner hinted that he would have to choose between Yuki Tsunoda, who had his first Red Bull test earlier this week, and current RB drivers Liam Lawson. When asked about Lawson's 2025 performance, Christian Horner responded that the New Zealander had taken Daniel Ricciardo's seat at RB after the US Grand Prix.
Christian Horner discuss process of Red Bull
"I think Liam Lawson, in challenging circumstances, has done a very good job. If you analyse what he's done in the time that he's had and the race pace he's had, I think he's done a good job." "I think Yuki Tsunoda has done a good job, so in the event that anything were decided with Checo, they would be the candidates we would look towards."
Along with discussing the next steps in the process with Sergio Perez, Horner also discussed how Red Bull plans to re-enter the constructors' battle in 2025.
