Robert Shwartzman is poised to make a notable appearance in Formula 1 as he steps in for Valtteri Bottas during Free Practice 1 (FP1) at the Dutch Grand Prix 2024. The announcement, confirmed by Kick Sauber, marks an exciting opportunity for the 24-year-old reserve driver from Ferrari to showcase his talents.

Shwartzman will take over Bottas’s seat in the C44 as the second half of the 2024 season kicks off at Zandvoort on August 23. This move is part of Kick Sauber's ongoing collaboration with Scuderia Ferrari to provide emerging drivers with valuable track experience.

"As in previous occasions, we work in partnership with Scuderia Ferrari to give young talent an opportunity in practice sessions. Good luck, Robert!" stated Kick Sauber, underscoring their commitment to nurturing new talent in the sport.

Who is Robert Schwartzman?

This will not be Shwartzman’s first foray into FP1 sessions. He previously participated in practice sessions with Ferrari in both the 2022 and 2023 seasons. His involvement in Formula 1 has been anticipated following a strong career trajectory in various racing series.

After clinching the Formula 3 championship with PREMA Racing in 2019, Shwartzman moved up to Formula 2, where he competed from 2020 to 2021, achieving fourth and second-place finishes in the drivers’ standings in consecutive seasons.

Beyond his achievements in single-seaters, Shwartzman has expanded his racing repertoire to sports cars and the World Endurance Championship with Ferrari. Under the current Formula 1 regulations, each team is required to run a rookie—defined as a driver who has started two or fewer Grands Prix—in at least two FP1 sessions per season. Shwartzman’s upcoming session at the Dutch Grand Prix will serve as Kick Sauber’s inaugural young driver outing for 2024, fulfilling this regulatory requirement.
