Alex Albon's impressive performance in the qualifying session for the Dutch Grand Prix is under serious scrutiny following a potential technical infraction. The Williams driver, who managed to secure a notable P8 position, is now facing the possibility of disqualification due to concerns over the legality of his car's floor.
During the post-qualifying technical inspection, FIA Formula 1 technical delegate Jo Bauer identified a potential violation of Article 3.5.1 a) of the technical regulations, which governs the dimensions of the car's floor. This regulation stipulates that the floor body must remain within the specified regulatory volume (RV-FLOOR-BODY). However, Bauer's assessment revealed that Albon’s car did not comply with this requirement.
In his report, Bauer stated, “After the qualifying session, the aerodynamic component and bodywork areas were checked on car number 23. The floor body was found to lie outside the regulatory volume mentioned in Article 3.5.1 a). I am referring this matter to the stewards for their consideration.”
The development is particularly notable as it marks the second consecutive race where a car's compliance with technical regulations has been questioned. In the previous race, George Russell's Belgian Grand Prix victory was nullified after his car was found to be underweight.
Albon, alongside a Williams team representative, has been summoned to a meeting with the stewards at 6:30 PM local time to discuss the issue. The outcome of this meeting could significantly impact Albon's starting position for the Dutch Grand Prix, potentially overturning his hard-earned qualifying result.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether Albon will be able to retain his P8 spot or if the stewards will impose a penalty, which could reshuffle the grid and impact the race strategy for the Williams team. The stakes are high, and the racing world will be closely watching for the final verdict on this critical issue.
