The WWE King and Queen of the Ring tournament has found its relevance since 2024, after being neglected for a long time since the PG Era. Under the new circumstances, winning the crown guarantees a shot at the world title at Summerslam. Gunther and Nia Jax, the current King and Queen of the Ring, went on to win the world title by beating Damian Priest and Bayley in 2024.
The first-ever edition of the tournament started in 1985, making it one of the oldest WWE events. Till 2002, the King of the Ring tournament did not take place in 1990 and 1992. Since then, the tournament has taken place only in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2015, 2019, 2021, and 2024. One could visibly observe the irregularity in the event, which made it an inconsequential event.
However, Triple H, who was a big fan of the tournament, made it relevant by giving the winners a shot at the world title in 2024. In 2021, the Queen of the Ring concept was introduced for the first time. There have been only two Queens: Zelina Vega in 2021 and Nia Jax in 2024. In 2025, Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes, Jey Uso, Jade Cargill, Roxanne Perez, and Asuka will aim to win their first crown.
In 2024, there was a separate PLE named 'King and Queen of the Ring' to make it a memorable event. In 2025, the Night of Champions will host the final. The format of the tournament is Knockouts, where draws are laid out to eliminate a wrestler in each round. In the final, two wrestlers will go at each other, hoping to be crowned.
The format has a small tweak in 2025. To avoid multiple matches in the Qualifiers, instead of a one-on-one match or a triple-threat match, two Fatal 4-way matches were introduced on Raw and SmackDown, respectively, in the Men's and Women's divisions. Winners of these matches made it to the semifinals, winning which would help the wrestlers enter the final.
