This year will mark the end of John Cena's illustrious WWE career. The 16-time world champion announced his presence for the 2025 Royal Rumble battle during his presence at the Raw Netflix launch last Monday, marking the beginning of his "farewell tour." Without a doubt, Cena's pursuit of a record-breaking 17th world title will be a major storyline leading up to WrestleMania season. Should he win the Rumble, he will be eligible to compete for the title of his choice in April.

However, who would he pick to play against in what would be his last match on the biggest platform of all? Well, his father has some thoughts. A question concerning a possible WrestleMania match between his son and current World Heavyweight Champion Gunther was posed to John Cena Sr. in an interview with Sportsskeeda.

"I think that right now, and nothing against Cody Rhodes I have nothing but good words for Cody. I just think that right now GUNTHER is at the peak of his career, he's the best of the best, and that's not taking anything away from Cody, because certainly down the road I'd love to see Rhodes against GUNTHER, winner take both. GUNTHER vs Cena would be THE match, and I think that's the person he should face," he said.

In fact, Cena Sr. predicted the outcome of the bout and supported his son to win. After that, Cena Sr. was questioned about the rumored internal company discussions regarding his son's potential matchup with Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes. WWE will wish to send Cena off in grand fashion since it is anticipated that he will bid wrestling farewell in 2025.

Cena starts his retirement tour

That would include a match for the record books at WrestleMania, and as his father implies, a man as strong as Gunther would make the ideal opponent. Despite record-breaking ticket prices, the WWE legend continues to deliver as part of what is being billed as his farewell tour. Cena's capacity to pack venues is still unmatched, whether it's through regular home concerts or large pay-per-view events like the Royal Rumble.

Cena's participation further heightens the anticipation for the Royal Rumble, which is already building into one of WWE's most anticipated events of the year. Before he retires from the ring permanently, fans are excited to watch one of the greatest of all time perform.
