In March 2010, Hager cashed in the Money in the Bank contract and won the World Heavyweight Championship from Chris Jericho on SmackDown. However, during an appearance on the Insight with Chris Van Vliet podcast, he shared that the original plan was for him to defeat Cena on Raw.
When host Chris Van Vliet asked how true the rumours were that Cena refused to lose the title to him, Hager replied: “Oh, yeah, he absolutely refused to do it… I was told that was what happened. Because the original plan was [that] I was going to beat him Monday night on Raw and not do the tease. But like, I’m a young guy. I mean, I’ve been there for a cup of coffee, so what are you going to do?”
"I was surprised to see what happened with him in Truth lately" - Hager on Cena
Hager added that Cena had a history of refusing to drop the title to others as well, but admitted he has been left surprised recently to see Cena showing willingness to work with R-Truth during his retirement farewell tour.
“But like, I’m not the only guy. He’s done that too. He did that throughout his career. I was surprised to see what happened with him in Truth lately, because usually, like, he tried to take that glory, but I feel like this time he’s the one who said, we better go with Truth and get him back here,” he said.
