It is a new day and a new era in WWE with a new champion in the American nightmare Cody Rhodes. It was finally great to see him finish his story after defeating tribal chief Roman Reigns who had held that title for more than 1300 days. With this it is also time to see how will Rhodes fare as a champion after main eventing possibly one of the greatest Wrestlemanias of all time filled with the right amount of Chaos and drama that the fans have enjoyed.
The time was near on Friday Night Smackdown where the Cody Rhodes first contender at the upcoming backlash event in France would be decided. There were a lot of worthy competitors in the mix till it was finally decided after 2 triple threat matches on who the two possible contenders will be. It was LA Knight who emerged victorious in the first match featuring Bobby Lashley and Santos Escobar and it was AJ Styles who came out on top in the second triple threat match beating the likes of Rey Mysterio and Kevin Owens. It was then set that the two will compete for the main event spot at Backlash on the night once again after WrestleMania.
The Phenomenal One emerges victorious
This was another match which looked like LA Knight had the edge over AJ Styles throughout. It seemed as though the mega star would be the guy at backlash. However, there was a surprising turn of events after Styles came out with a dirty eye poke which the referee didn’t catch and it was the Phenomenal one who ended the match with a phenomenal forearm and pinned Knight to be in the main event of backlash.
This match has set the tone for Rhodes who will be up against one of the best in-ring workers in the company. It has been a long time since we have seen Styles be in the main event for a WWE championship as well. This will no doubt set up a great match between the two wrestlers and a great test for Rhodes who will be defending his title for the first time in Backlash that will be happening on the 4th of May. With AJ Styles now being a heel this could create great story lines among the two as well
