AJ Styles returned to WWE Smackdown for the first time since Clash at the Castle. The Phenomenal One had an emotional comeback as the fans welcomed with both arms. He had no respite as Caremlo Hayes confronted him with a war of words. As LA Knight confronted the duo, a match was set between Hayes and AJ, and the latter got injured.
Styles returned to the blue brand for the first time since losing to Cody Rhodes in Glasgow. He was in NOAH after Castle. But AJ hasn't been in action since then. A week ago, it was announced that Styles would be back in action for the first time in months.

AJ returned to a good reaction from the fans. As they chanted "AJ Styles Welcome Back," the star wrestler felt he had a lot to think about his past. But he focused on the future and claimed to be ready for future challenges. However, he was confronted by Carmelo Hayes leading to the fans booing him.

Melo claimed that he had a 3-3 record over Andrade and added that he respected all-timers like Styles. However, he felt it was time for youngsters like him to rule the roster. Melo claimed to be a deserving candidate to have a shot at the US title.
LA Knight entered the arena and addressed the duo. AJ remembered how he and Knight had taken each other to a limit in their feud earlier this year. Knight agreed to it and challenged Carmelo to take on Styles in a one-on-one match. If Hayes was to win it, he was guaranteed a shot at Knight's title.
Melo did not want to take on Styles but was forced to do it. The match was brief and Carmelo picked up a win as the Phenomenal One walked away from the battle. During the match, the former world champion injured his leg and walked away from the house. The fans wondered if it was a part of the script.
