WTA World No. 1 Iga Swiatek hires Belgian Wim Fissette as her new coach

Queen of clay, Iga Swiatek ended long her three-year partnership with coach Tomasz Wiktorowski and hired Belgian Wim Fissette as her new gaffer.

Iga Swiatek has successfully settled on a new coach in her quest for guidance and support. The Polish world number, the one who recently announced her collaboration with Belgian Wim Fissette, marking an exciting new chapter in her career.

Swiatek-Tomasz Player Coach duo splits up after 3 years 

The announcement follows the conclusion of Iga Swiatek's successful three-year partnership with Tomasz Wiktorowski, which began in late 2021. During this time, Swiatek achieved remarkable success, claiming five Grand Slam titles and reaching World No. 1 for the first time. Before she collaborated with Wiktorowski, she was coached by Piotr Sierzputowski since 2016. With this new chapter, Swiatek will be working with her first non-Polish coach, looking forward to fresh perspectives and continued growth in her career.

Swiatek-Fiessette era begins

Fissette will be coaching Swiatek, marking the sixth time he has worked with a player at the top of the world rankings. The experienced 44-year-old Belgian successfully guided illustrious tennis stars such as Kim Clijsters, Simona Halep, Victoria Azarenka, Angelique Kerber, and Naomi Osaka. Notably, Fissette has faced Swiatek during matches involving Osaka, including the 2022 Miami final, where Osaka put forth a strong effort but ultimately lost 6-4, 6-0. In September, Osaka announced the conclusion of their four-year collaboration, paving the way for Fissette to bring his expertise to Swiatek's journey in the sport.

Iga Swiatek has taken some time off since her quarterfinal performance against Jessica Pegula at the US Open. With Aryna Sabalenka poised to challenge for the World No. 1 ranking in the upcoming weeks, it will be interesting to see how Swiatek prepares for her return to competition.

"I'm happy to announce that Wim Fissette is joining our team," Swiatek posted on social media.

"As you know, I'm preparing for the WTA Finals but my perspective is, as always, long-term, not short-term. I said many times that my career is a marathon for me, not a sprint and I'm working, operating, and making decisions with this approach" she added.
