Zheng Qinwen scripted history in the French capital by becoming the first-ever Chinese player to win gold in tennis singles at the Olympics. Qinwen put up a dominant display against Croatia's Donna Vekic in the final at Roland Garros on Saturday (August 3).

The reigning Asian Games champion made a strong start on Court Philippe-Chatrier by breaking early to take a 3-0 lead. Vekic managed to win two games but failed to hold her nerve in one of the biggest matches of her career so far. Qinwen eventually clinched the set 6-2 with a second break of serve.

The Chinese superstar continued her fine form in the second set as she took a 2-0 lead early on. However, Vekic showed some fighting spirit this time around as she won two games and levelled the scoreline. At 4-3, it seemed like the Croatian would take the match to a decider, but she faltered. With a 5-3 lead, Qinwen didn't mess up and sealed the series with one more win.

A few days ago, Qinwen became the first Chinese player in history to reach an Olympic singles final after a thrilling 6-2, 7-5 victory over world number one Iga Swiatek. Today, she has taken it a step further and achieved a feat that no one from her country has ever achieved.

Notably, Qinwen became the first player since 2021 to beat Swiatek at Roland Garros. The Polish player hasn’t lost at the French Open venue in the last three years. She finished her campaign with a bronze medal after beating Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-2 6-1 on Friday.
