The Women's Singles event was down to the semi-finals and we all were looking forward to seeing World number One Iga Swiatek go on to win a gold medal in Paris. This is a venue where Iga has had a lot of success and we all had her as the favourite to win the Gold in the Paris Olympics 2024. Being the world number one she was the clear favourite in this tournament.

Iga Swiatek was going to be up against Chinese number one player Qinwen Zheng, who had a great tournament in the Paris Olympics as well. This was a match to look forward to where we see the Polish Superstar against a spirited Chinese player who has also been making massive strides in the game and being a top 10 player in the WTA rankings. All we can say this was not a contest to take lightly at all.

Swiatek faces a shocking defeat

This was a match where Swiatek got a scare in the match straight away where Zheng got the upper hand on the Polish superstar winning the first set by a margin of 6-2 putting the World number one under pressure straight away. The second set was a great battle but on this occasion, it was Swiatek who ended up on the losing side with a score of 7-5 to the Chinese number one player. This was another big upset if we did not expect it at all. This was one of the most shocking defeats for Swiatek who has been having one of her best seasons this year.

Though some of us are still disappointed to see Swiatek lose her chance of winning Gold in the singles event, we should appreciate and celebrate the great performance as she will go on to the finals in the hope of a Gold. However, it is not the end for Swiatek as she can still go on to win a Bronze medal and still be the first Polish player to achieve this feat as well.
