Erika Andreeva pulled off a major upset at the Monterrey Open 2024, defeating top-seeded Danielle Collins in the second round. The 20-year-old recorded her first win against a top-20 player to advance to the quarter-finals of a top-level WTA tournament.
Collins was one of the favourites to clinch the title, but she had to make an early exit. Andreeva claimed one of the best wins of her career with a score of 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 in a match that lasted one hour and 51 minutes on Wednesday at the hardcourt tournament in Mexico.
Meanwhile, on her way to a three-set loss, Collins was seen venting her frustrations on the crowd, who was constantly making noise from the stands. In a video that has gone viral on social media, the American player can be heard saying, “What in the world? I don’t get it. It’s not that hard to let us play tennis and be supportive.” The incident took place when she trailed 3-4 in the third set.

I just hit the yellow ball and I don't care who I play: Andreeva during post-match interview
It has been learned that both players have had issues with the same group of people in the stands during the match for making noise. Speaking after the match, Andreeva said that she did not care about her opponent and focused on her game to avoid additional pressure.
"Every time I play this [level] of opponent I try not to think about [their ranking], because it puts more pressure on me. Can I do it? And, I have to take all my opportunities I get. But this time I was like, OK, I just hit the yellow ball and I don't care who I play,” the Russian said during the on-court interview.
"Honestly, the first set just went so fast. She did also amazing hitting. I pushed myself to be more aggressive, and pushed more on the first shots to make her less comfortable,” she added.
