Tennis sensation Petra Kvitova recently stepped onto the court for the first time in the past 17 months, marking her return to professional tennis after giving birth to her baby boy, Petr, in July 2024. This return to the game was significant as it marked her first game since the China Open in October 2023.
Her first game was at the WTA 250 ATX Open in Austin, Texas, where she faced British star Jodie Burrage. Despite marking the win in the first set of the game, Kvitova suffered defeat in a three-match set with a scoreline of 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Burrage's strong serving, including 14 aces, was crucial in her stunning win.
The star player was motivated by the successful comebacks of her fellow players, like Naomi Osaka, Elina Svitolina, and Belinda Bencic, who marked their return to the game after childbirth. After her exit in the opening round of the ATX Open, the 34-year-old is set to appear in the WTA 1000 events in Indian Wells and Miami Open.
Kvitova's maternity break lasted for over 17 months, during which she welcomed her first child. Earlier, the two-time Grand Slam winner was uncertain about returning to the game but was inspired by other women.

Petra Kvitova not setting goals after her tennis comeback
“Those girls are pretty young still of course, I would say my age is different. But we’re used to working hard. Even after pregnancy and giving birth we know what to do and we’re willing to do it. When you already played well before, you want to be back where you belong, basically. I’m not putting any goals on myself, I’ll never play as good as I was playing when I was winning tournaments. I want to enjoy myself playing tennis and it’ll take time," Kvitova told the WTA website.
